Today we are off to the Mediterranean, tracing the footsteps of Paul. It will be interesting to see the places where Paul wandered, but I’m happy to skip Paul’s experiences of being beaten, whipped, stoned, imprisoned, and shipwrecked… three times! (2 Corinthians 11:23-28). I’m praying that things will go much smoother on our adventure. Travel can be stressful so, like Paul (1 Thes. 5:25), I ask for your prayers as we travel far from home.
You can revisit the original posting on prayer (tefillah), but I will tell you that the first Biblical indication of prayer (without using the specific word), can be found a generation after Cain killed Abel. Adam and Eve had another son named Seth, and Seth had a son named Enosh, after which we read…
Genesis 4:26b
“Then people began to call upon the name of YHWH.”
אָ֣ז הוּחַ֔ל לִקְרֹ֖א בְּשֵׁ֥ם יְהוָֽה
Az hukhal liq’ro b’shem YHWH.

Prayer is just that simple. Calling on the name of YHWH, reaching out, saying hello, saying thank you, asking for help for yourself or for others. It’s not about flowery speech, it’s about making a connection with the God who created you and loves you.
And so, again, I ask for your prayers for safe travel as we fly today and find ourselves in Athens tomorrow.
Shalom, dear readers! See you next Sunday when we are in Ephesus!
